The pediatric emergency medicine fellowship will provide the trainee with the knowledge, technical skills, and clinical judgment needed to provide optimal care for children in an emergency department. This is accomplished through a combination of clinical rotations, formal teaching conferences and the development of critical thinking and research skills. The fellowship is designed to prepare the pediatrician or emergency medicine physician for a career in either an academic setting or a more clinically oriented environment in pediatric emergency medicine.

The fellowship curriculum is divided into five sections:  A. Clinical practice, B. Teaching and consulting, C. Administrative  training, D. Research training, and E. Career development.

• Learn skills necessary for the care of acutely ill or injured pediatric patients of all ages in the setting of an emergency department (ED).
• Learn procedural skills necessary for the practice of pediatric emergency medicine.
• Understand concepts of patient triage and patient flow in the emergency department.
• Attain appropriate interpersonal and communication skills to interact with others on the health care team and with patients and their families, as it relates to both ethical and medical issues.
• Learn to act in a professional manner.

• Teach in one-on-one settings to pediatric/emergency medicine/family medicine residents, medical students, other members of the health care team (EMT, paramedics, nurses), parents, and families.
• Lead small group discussions.
• Lead small group discussions.
• Teach resuscitation and procedural skills.
• Act as effective consultants and/or representatives for the emergency department.
• Attain appropriate interpersonal and communication skills to interact with superiors and subordinates.
• Learn to act in a professional manner.

• Display leadership in the Emergency Department.
• Develop expertise in Emergency Department supervision.
• Gain experience and confidence with personnel management and staffing.
• Gain familiarity with risk management/medicolegal issues.
• Conduct Quality Improvement (QI).

• Understand processes associated with billing.
• Gain exposure to marketing/financial management/reimbursement issues.

• Critically assess soundness of research protocols and validity of published research reports.
• Understand basic clinical epidemiological principles and biostatistics.
• Design and conduct scholarly projects that are hypothesis driven.
• Learn to analyze and interpret data from their own individual projects and that of others.
